Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke noted that infrastructure development and transportation were key priority areas in the agenda for accelerated national development by President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua. She added: "It is therefore of critical importance that we find ways of alligning and streamlining our relationship in this particular area, so that togethet we find ways to progress not only in our business relationship, but also in the underlying essential strengths of the seven point agenda of President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua. I agree with the proposal for deepening relationship in the construction of railway and the transfer of technology". She urged prudent and pragmatic discussions in the listed areas to deepen Nigeria and Chinese bilateral relations. Addressing the Minister and officials of the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Chinese Vice Minister of Commerce, Mr. Chen Jian said the objects of his visit to Nigeria were to review the implementation of the eight measures proposed by the Chinese side during the Beinjing Summit of the African - China Cooperation Forum, and to jointly discuss with Nigerian colleagues how to expand and deepen Nigeria and Chinese bilateral economic and trade cooperations. He recalled that cooperation between Nigeria and China had been going very well in different sectors, particularly in the transportation and railway sector where collaboration had expanded progressively. He said they were willing and ready to deepen relationship in the area of construction particularly in railways, development of human capacity and technology transfer. He stated China's readiness to expand cooperation beyond railway and road construction to aviaiton, River and Maritime transportation. He called for the strengthening of cooperation forums through fairs and exhibitions in the two countries, as well as links between financial institutions in the two countries to facilitate cooperation between their various enterprises, and to protect and improve the environment for investment in both countries. He disclosed that Nigeria - China bilaterial trade figures currently stood at $4billion, and that there were tens of thousand of visitors vising the two countries annually.
